At German-Thai Translation Agency with its main office situated close to the German Embassy in Thailand (see

certified translations from Thai into German and from German into Thai.
Translations of official and legal documents for the purpose of submission to German authorities (for example, to the civil registry office, or to courts, embassies or ministries) have to be
certified, where only
publicly appointed and sworn translators are permitted to certify them.
For his or her appointment and swearing-in, a translator must prove the required qualifications such as a university degree for translators or a passed state examination for translators.
As early as in 1990, Sebastian Kiesow received his Certificate of Educational Competence from the Thai Ministry of Education for “
outstanding knowledge of Thai”. After he took the examination with the
Staatliches Prüfungsamt für Dolmetscher und Übersetzer (state-operated examination office for interpreters and translators) in Darmstadt he was sworn in before the
Landgericht (regional courts) of Heilbronn and Berlin as liaison interpreter and publicly appointed translator of official and legal documents of Thai language. (Refer to

Erik Schottstädt studied Southeast Asian Studies at Humboldt-University of Berlin and Ramkhamhaeng University in Bangkok. He was sworn in as liaison interpreter for Thai language before the
Landgericht (regional court) of Berlin.

When translating official or legal documents quality is of paramount importance. Translations of legal and official documents made for official purposes and have to be submitted to authorities and administrative bodies, for example certificates of no impediment, certificates of marital status, birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce certificates, death certificates, change of name certificates, verdicts, land register extracts, registrations of birth, death, marriage, divorce, adoption, paternity, or other administrative documents like driving licences, contracts and various agreements most often need to be
certified. As a rule, certification is necessary for translations of school certificates, vocational training certificates, diplomas, and certificates of all kinds.
The
certification of a translation of a legal or official document is accomplished by the
sworn translator adding an attestation clause, a “certified” stamp and his or her signature, therefore no lawyer or notary is needed to
certify a translation. Once completed we deliver the translation to you by post or you can take it with you immediately. If desired and if possible we can submit your documents (e.g. for the purpose of legalisation) together with the attached certified translations to the German Embassy in Bangkok and/or ship them according to your wishes.

original or an attested copy of your documents to be translated by post, by e-mail attachment or by fax, or just stop by (
contact) and commission us to co-ordinate and handle the matter (
compilation, verification, possible correction, translation of the documents necessary for
marriage, divorce, family reunion of spouses and children, acknowledgment of paternity, birth certificates and others) directly with your point of contact in Thailand.
If desired, we also provide you with a
copy of the translation by fax, e-mail or as a scanned printout. But please note that you must always submit the
original of the certified translation to the authorities.

Information about translations
What is behind a translation?
Here is some information about
translations, translators, interpreters and about the
Thai language, about what are translations needed for, who translates, and what is understood by translating.
One should differentiate between
translating and interpreting: a translator transforms a text written in one language (source language; here in
German or
Thai) into a text written in another language (target language; here
Thai and
German, respectively).
Interpreters translate orally, often simultaneously e.g. during visits to the authorities or business meetings.

When can one speak of a translation? Is a fully-automatic transformation of a text from one language into another alone a translation?
Translating texts and interpreting conversations are creative processes and far more than a mere transfer of words. The translation software which is available today is unable to produce even a simple text of acceptable quality due to the fact that good translations are based not only on the knowledge of grammatical rules, but also and more importantly on contextual and intercultural knowledge. Dictionaries and machine translation programs are useful
tools for translating but they do not comply with the quality standards of professional translators.

Thai language
Thai language (or
Thai) belongs like Lao (or Laotian), Vietnamese and Chinese to the so-called tonal languages, this means that words have completely different meanings based on pronunciation, different pitches and tones. Altogether there are five different phonemic tones in Thai.
Thai script is written from left to right. Its alphabet consists of 36 characters for vowels and vowel combinations (diphthongs/trithongs) which are arranged to the left or right, above or below the corresponding consonant, of 44 characters for consonants, and of four tone markers. There is no hyphenation in Thai, and the gaps between words indicate the point where there are commas in other languages or the end of a sentence.
